| The Australian Government has made changes to how SMS sender names will be displayed. From 1 July 2026, you may receive SMS’s with ‘unverified’ as the Sender ID (the name that replaces the phone number at the top of an SMS, e.g. ‘ATO’ or ‘AusPost’). That’s because a new rule designed to combat scams requires organisations to register their Sender IDs from 1 July 2026. If you get an SMS from ‘unverified’ after 1 July 2026, it means the Sender ID hasn’t been registered with the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA). This doesn’t mean if you get an SMS from an ‘unverified’ sender, it’s a scam. You should just treat it with caution by avoiding clicking links or sharing personal information if you’re unsure if the message is legitimate.
